Flow of the Day

A typical morning at St. John’s begins when parents bring their children into the classroom and spend a short time with them to ease the transition from home to school. This is followed by Morning Meeting, when children and teachers make their plans for the day. Teachers have prepared an environment rich in materials and possibilities. They observe and listen to children in order to know how to proceed with the work. Investigations in all areas of the classroom provide the narrative and structure to the children’s and teachers’ learning experiences, both individually or in small groups. After a snack and clean-up, the children gather together for their second meeting to reflect on the day and read stories. The children use the outdoor classroom on a daily basis.

Hours

Children may arrive early to participate in the Early Birds program, which begins at 8:00 AM, or stay for the afternoon Kids’ Workshop between 12:30 until 3:00 PM. Under the direction of St. John’s staff, these mixed age group auxiliary programs offer a rich extension of our philosophy. Children participating in the afternoon Kids’ Workshop bring lunch from home and enjoy time in the outdoor classroom.
